Introducing Southern Snowman

Southern Snowman was founded by Rick Nordman in 2007. As a winter enthusiast relocating from the Northeast to North Carolina during the mid 80s, Rick was an avid snowboarder who could appreciate everything about a nice snow storm. Maybe it was the sight of snowflakes falling from the sky in complete silence resulting in a beautiful snowy lanscape, or just enjoying all the fun activities like sledding, snowball fights, and snowman building that the following snow day would bring. Either way, Rick found a way to not only hold on to his childhood memories, but also allow other families the opportunity to create snow memories of their own. Since snow is increasingly hard to come by in the south, Southern Snowman was born at Mt. Roundtree in Cary, NC!

In the beginning…
The business initially started with the early adoption of home snowmaking equipment allowing Southern Snowman to create real snow utilizing compressed air and water at the right temperature and humidity, just like your favorite ski resorts! Over the years, Southern Snowman expanded its snowmaking capabilities by refining the process and leveraging new equipment and technology, allowing us to cover a larger area with snow. Then, Mt. Roundtree expanded its suburban footprint by creating a 150 ft lighted sledding hill visible from heavily traveled Maynard Rd. In addition to covering Mt. Roundtree during the winter for sledding and snowboarding, Southern Snowman took our “Snow on the Road” and made snow at many homes! We also sold complete snowmaking systems to customers like the NC Zoo for their polar bear exhibit and meteorologist Van Denton in High Point, NC. Due to the unpredictability of cold temperatures in central North Carolina, Southern Snowman re-imagined the original business model in order to serve a broader customer base.

Introducing our Snowfall Effect Service
Southern Snowman continues to be a distributor of home snowmaking equipment from parent company SnowAtHome, providing families the opportunity to make snow themselves whenever weather permits. In addition, we’re now providing a turn-key movie quality snowfall effect service that simulates falling snow in any temperature. Just as with our initial snowmaking capabilities, we’ve grown our snowfall effect arsenal over the years providing our services for WRAL, a growing list of cities including Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Selma, and many organizations and communities across the Carolinas. Although the business has continued to expand annually due to an almost 100% re-booking rate, Southern Snowman looked to expand once again to offer services year round.

Chillin in the Summer
Southern Snowman has recognized that the lack of real snow during the winter in North Carolina has led to increased demand for our snow services. In addition, our Carolina summers continue to get hotter each year as well which has resulted in our latest offering: Southern Snowman Misting Services. By combining the use of our home snowmaking gun technology and our snowfall effect services, we are able to create a large supercooled misting area for summer events. Lowering temperatures via evaporative cooling and adding some snow falling creates a “chilled” visual effect for everyone. (See our Misting Services Page for more details, pictures, and videos). Now that we’re able to provide both snow and misting services for our customers throughout the year, Southern Snowman is positioned to Chill the Carolinas for years to come and we’re excited about the future!
